My first area is Logan, West Virginia! Situated along the beautiful Guyandotte River, Logan is a charming city with a rich history. Originally known as “Islands of the Guyandot,” Logan was established in 1827 as the county seat of Logan County. Initially called “Lawsonsville” after an early merchant, the town was later renamed “Aracoma” in honor of Cornstalk’s daughter, a Shawnee chief who was killed by settlers in the area. Finally, in 1907, the city was renamed “Logan” after the Mingo leader, Chief Logan.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Logan was a bustling hub of the regional coal industry. At its peak in 1940, the city was home to over 5,000 residents and numerous businesses, including furniture stores, hotels, banks, and car dealerships. However, the increased mechanization of the coal industry following World War II and the so-called “war on coal” led to a decline in Logan’s population and economy.
Despite these changes, Logan remains a beautiful and welcoming destination for travellers. With a population of 1,438 at the 2020 census, the city boasts a quaint and cozy atmosphere that is perfect for exploring. Whether you’re interested in history, nature, or simply taking in the local culture, Logan has something to offer.
