First Things First – The MTC

Entering the Provo MTC

Missionary Training Centers (MTCs) provide intensive ‘basic training’ to missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The best-known MTC is located in Provo, Utah. However, there are 10 other MTCs scattered throughout the world in Brazil, Colombia, England, Ghana, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, the Philippines, and South Africa.

New missionaries typically spend between 3 and 12 weeks at an MTC before being sent out on their mission. During this time, they receive training in doctrine, conduct, and proselytizing methods, as well as language training if required. When they arrive at the MTC, they are assigned companions and organized into districts (small groups of missionaries who will usually be serving in the same part of the world). The missionaries spend the majority of their time in class with breaks for meals, church services, temple attendance, fitness activities, service projects, and personal preparation time.

The training provided in the MTC is typically taught by returned missionaries and focuses on teaching missionaries proper methods for proselytizing, as well as how to interact appropriately with the people they will be serving. They are encouraged to actively study church scriptures and doctrine, and missionaries who do not speak the language of their assigned area may spend as many as nine additional weeks in language training.

The time spent at the MTC is vital in preparing missionaries for their service in the Church. By instilling important values, doctrines, and language skills, MTCs help ensure that missionaries are well-prepared to serve the people they will meet during their mission.
